INSANITY PROJECT - description:

GROUP SESSIONS

In October 2015 we invited a group of dancemakers from Poland and Germany to join us on a research project. The research ivolved studio work and a series of group improvisation acts made in public places/non-thetrical venues. The theme of it was insanity as a performing tool in a dance show.

The purpose of that  meeting was to create a method of group work, which would on one hand give performers a chance to built convincing characters, and on the other, enable them to stay in a specific stage presence, based on physicality, real time activities and the use of dance as a language of communication. The work tested choreographic practice as a tool of building the performance, shifting the focus to improvisation and communication inside the group. The insanity mentioned in the title was a lead for the performers which was to take us both to our own, personal and the goup UNPREDICTABILITY.

As a result of the lab, we came up with a goup performance format to be executed in public spaces, which focuses on composition strategies applied in real time. The scores we employ in that piece vary. They are always very much related to the specific space we perform in, but also the larger context  - the town, th contry, the time of day or year. Apart from strictly dance/dancemaking tools, we also use other atistic references, for instance literature (Arthur Schnitzler's play Reigen in Milchhof Pavillion, in Berlin) or music (Trevor Wishart's composition Tongues of Fire in Magdeburg).
